Baby Boomers Abroad - Mexico, Caribbean Real Estate

Roatan, Bay Islands, Western Caribbean

Times have changed. Our parents thought Florida and Arizona were far off places. I guess at the time they were. Inexpensive land, low property taxes, no state income taxes in Florida. Overall a great way to beat the winter snows, decrease expenses and retire in comfort.

Baby Boomers have always been more adventurous than our parents. As we are headed towards the same goal nothing has really changed. We are all looking for that place to stretch our dollars. We just want something a little different. A little more adventourous. A little more fun.

Well now you can. Research Roatan. Tropical island living. Direct flights from the U.S. Pete Dye design golf course, many tax advantages....................

I am often asked by people looking to either relocate to Roatan or invest in the island for vacations or future usage. Why Roatan? Why not Panama, Nicaragua, Salvador, Guatemala, Belize?

Obviously there are pros and cons to all places. I could go down the line here doing an evaluation of each country or place but really no need. It really comes down to a couple of things as far as I am concerned.

First Roatan is an island. None of the rest are. Besides islands having a certain "lure" about them and upsides like the cooling breezes from the sea during the heat of summer, (yep you are a heck of a lot closer to the equator than most are now). Roatan is only 2-3 miles wide means that the air is approximately the temperature of the water. That means that when it is 100º out the breeze can easily be in the 80º's. Very nice.

Geographically it is like comparing Florida with eastern Caribbean Islands. Tough to do. Florida is a nice place. Warm climate, nice beaches, good spot. But when you think of Cayman. BVI, Bahamas,... is Florida in that thought process? I would not think so and often neither are the pricing structures. I believe the same comparison can be made when looking at Central America versus the Bay Islands. Central American countries have warm climates; have beaches and certainly pluses to consider. None though are islands. None especially are mostly English speaking islands. To some that may not make a difference. Too many that is a big deal, especially if they are coming from North America. Purchasing property in a foreign country is a cultural difference to begin with, but now throw in learning a new language to boot?

Democratic country, tropical island, mostly English speaking, reasonable prices, white sand beaches, aqua blue waters, direct flights from the states and seasonally from Europe and Canada, low taxes..................... Things sure do add up on the plus side of the evaluation process in favor of a place like Roatan.
