Caribbean Retirement Real Estate Investment-Boomers Abroad

Are you considering being one of the million of Baby Boomers moving abroad?

The number of Americans and Canadians living abroad, approximatley 7 Million according to The Washington Post, which is twice the population of Chicago and greater than that of 33 U.S. States, has steadily grown over the past decade and it is expected to more than double within the next 10 years.

As U.S. Baby Boomers head for retirement, a look at the dreams of their parents bring back memories of the hundreds of thousands who retired to far off “promised lands” like Florida and Arizona. Pioneer developers like Walt Disney created fantasy worlds and helped shape an adventurous mindset for that generation and their children. They sought warm climates during winter months, low or no income taxes, golf, fishing, and numerous other benefits tailor-made for a budget-minded generation.

The Boomer Generation Retires
Where, now, does the retirement thinking process lead for the Boomers themselves? This is the generation that came of age in the seventies—the generation that brought technology from an idea to a staple of everyday life. These are the people who colored outside the lines, forging new frontiers, substituting world travel—their version of the same adventure—for a trip to Florida and, in the process, shrinking the world.

Central America is steadily becoming “Florida” for retiring Boomers from around the world. Increasing numbers of them are turning to this part of the world to explore their retirement adventure. The more they look, the more real evidence they find that this just may be their place to find the same dream as their parents in retirement—warm climates and economic advantages such as very large income tax advantages for those who choose residency, negligible property taxes, reasonable medical care and prescription medication costs, and affordable housing—all within a couple of flight hours from the U.S.

Top Retirement Real Estate investment

The Wall Street Journal Calls Roatan "the Region's Next 'It' Spot"

Listed on CNNmoney.com's "Hottest Foreign Second Home Markets"

Why Roatan?- not Mexico, and other places south?

I am often asked this question by people looking to relocate to Roatan or invest in the island for vacations or future usage. Why Roatan? Why not Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize?

Obviously there are pros and cons to all places. I could go down the line here doing an evaluation of each country or place but there’s really no need. It comes down to a couple of things as far as I am concerned.

First of all, Roatan is a Caribbean island; none of the others are. Islands have a certain "lure" about them, a mystique and a seduction which conjures up the same image in everyone’s mind – warm, clear water and soft sand between your toes. As a practical matter, islands also have the advantage of cooling breezes from the sea during the heat of summer, (yep - you are a heck of a lot closer to the equator here). Roatan is only 2-3 miles wide which means that the air is approximately the temperature of the water. So when the air temperature wants to be 100º the breeze can easily make it in the 80º's. Very nice.

Geographically, it is like comparing Florida with eastern Caribbean Islands; tough to do. Florida is a nice place; warm climate, nice beaches…..a good spot. But when you think of Cayman. BVI, Bahamas... is Florida in your thought process? I wouldn’t think so and often neither are the pricing structures. I believe the same comparison can be made when looking at Central America versus the Bay Islands. Central American countries have warm climates; have beaches and certainly pluses to consider. None, though, are islands. The Bay Islands are mainly English speaking. To some people that may not make a difference, but to many that is a big deal, especially if they are coming from North America. Purchasing property in a foreign country is a cultural difference to begin with, but now throw in learning a new language to boot? English speaking is a real plus for most comfort levels.

Other points to put in your decision-making hat: Honduras is a democratic country, has tropical islands which are mostly English speaking, reasonable prices, white sand beaches, aqua blue waters, direct flights from the states and seasonally from Madrid, Rome, Milan and Canada, low taxes, many pluses..................... elements sure do add up on the plus side of the evaluation process in favor of a place like Roatan.

Baby Boomers Abroad - Mexico, Caribbean Real Estate

Roatan, Bay Islands, Western Caribbean

Times have changed. Our parents thought Florida and Arizona were far off places. I guess at the time they were. Inexpensive land, low property taxes, no state income taxes in Florida. Overall a great way to beat the winter snows, decrease expenses and retire in comfort.

Baby Boomers have always been more adventurous than our parents. As we are headed towards the same goal nothing has really changed. We are all looking for that place to stretch our dollars. We just want something a little different. A little more adventourous. A little more fun.

Well now you can. Research Roatan. Tropical island living. Direct flights from the U.S. Pete Dye design golf course, many tax advantages....................

I am often asked by people looking to either relocate to Roatan or invest in the island for vacations or future usage. Why Roatan? Why not Panama, Nicaragua, Salvador, Guatemala, Belize?

Roatan/Retirement/Real Estate Investment/Off Shore Money/ Baby Boomers/Mexico/Caribbean

With all that is going on in the world economically it really is a tough place out there now. I heard on the news that American Investors have now lost almost $8 TRILLION dollars of their wealth. Who would have ever thought CITI would be trading for what a pack gum costs or about that.

I really do not think anyone really knows what to do. Should the government spend us out of this? Raise Taxes? Cut taxes? What should be done?

I understand that many are having homes foreclosed on and are unemployed but also understand that over 90% of the homeowners out there, (over 55 million), who are paying their bills on time.

I saw a "pundit" on a business channel that says his investment company is suggesting 90% of your assets should be in cash. WOW. When was the last time you heard that one.

Many are researching cashing it in and moving it out. Actually about 13,000 "Baby Boomers" retire EVERYDAY. Many of those are looking off shore where they may be able to keep some of what they still have left. Where the property taxes are low, the income taxes the same, and all the confusion is gone.

Ever think this may be for you? Most of the Caribbean is pretty expensive. Mexico? Decreasingly looking like a good move as of late. Consider Roatan....... An Island in the Western Caribbean, mostly English speaking, Democratic country, (for decades), warm climate, white beaches, aqua waters, friendly atmosphere,.................. Sound interesting? .............................. Check it out
